Project Statement

As part of a major renovation completed by the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific, a "Healing Garden" was developed in the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Courtyard of the Hospital. The "Healing Garden" is a covered/open outdoor area for patient care programs, that included, a gazebo, water feature, Zen garden, planting beds, a mobility track designed for patients to practice moving across different surfaces and multi-use covered seating areas. As part of rehabilitation activities to maximize each patient's recovery, the Hospital began a horticulture program which included the Planter for patients to grow and care for flowers and edibles.

The Horticulture staff envisioned a sectional planter of varying depths and sizes to grow various types of plants. Wheelchair access was also desired. Siting was also a concern as the Courtyard was used for a multitude of activities and the Planter location could not disrupt the other on-going rehabilitation activities. After discussions with the staff, it was proposed to site the Planter in a "niche" of the free form concrete walkway, adjacent to a planting area and the mobility track.

A five (5) section planter was developed, with access for up to four (4) wheelchairs at one time. Copper liners were provided in each section, with a drainage system designed to empty each section into an existing drain. Inorder to continue the theme and atmosphere of the "Healing Garden" it was decided to use wood (T & G cedar liners with mahogany trims) as the planter material. A polyurethane semiĀ transparent stain was used on the planter to accentuate the rustic and knotty texture of the cedar.
