September is "Associate Appreciation Month"

While some may only think of builders and contractors when they think of the Building Industry Association, it is in fact the Associates that make up the majority of our association. They provide products and services to our builder members that range from appliances to windows and everything in-between.

Meet some of our valued Associate Members:

Q: Tell us of a remarkable job you had and how does it apply to your job now?
A: I used to be a professional competing body boarder. I met a lot of people then and it enables me now to meet people through that experience.

Karen Berry, Trade Publishing Company

Q: Where is a bizarre location you have traveled to?
A: Before joining BIA, my husband lured me hundreds of miles from Paris where I was enjoying shopping and fine dining to a place high in the Pyrenees where he wanted to see the ruins of a Templar castle. When we got there, miles from towns or people other than shepherds, there were animals and pesky gnats everywhere. I wanted to leave immediately as he walked around admiring the castle’s construction—its inaccessible location and natural and man-made defensive fortifications. I could only see the need for upgrades, starting with better stonework, bigger window openings with more picturesque views, and running water.

Q: Tell us of a remarkable job you had and how does it apply to your job now?
A: In my first executive job in media, I ultimately became the manager responsible for advertising placed in newspapers serving the four major branches of the armed forces in Hawaii. As the papers continued to evolve, I acquired experience with installation tenants and contracting offices while the individual military commands—Army, Navy, Marine, and Air Force public affairs officials--handled all of the editorial matters. My biggest accounts became mainland agencies booking space in military publications, as well as the Navy and Army-Air Force exchange systems. Both involved occasional mainland travel and the overall experience provided perspective about military affairs on and off base.
