Aloha Members,

On Tuesday, May 5, the Legislature passed H.B. 830, C.D. 1, which provides for an exemption from State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD) review proposed projects on privately-owned single-family detached dwelling units and townhouses that are not designated on or nominated for the Hawaii or national register of historic places and are not located in a historic district.

This is a huge win for the BIA-Hawaii, as we have been working on finding relief for homeowners for many years now! But, we could not have done it without your help in participating in our Voter Voice and contacting your legislator to let them know how important this legislation is to homeowners and to the building and construction industry. Our Government Relations Committee has worked extra hard on this this session, so many thanks go out to the Chair and committee members.

Our champion in the Legislature is Rep. Ryan Yamane (Mililani, Waipio Gentry, Waikele), who is Chair of Water & Land Committee. If he is your Legislator, or not, a quick thank you ( would really be appreciated.

On the Senate side, Senator Laura H. Thielen ( and Senator Brian Taniguchi ( were both very instrumental in also getting this bill passed.

Home Stretch

There is one more hurdle: we are awaiting the Governor's approval. We will be working on ensuring a positive outcome, and we will once more be seeking your help with our Voter Voice. Participation is critical so we hope we can continue to count on your support until H.B. 830, C.D. 1, is law.

Thank you again for your continued support! Together we can make positive changes for Hawaii!
