Mahalo to our members who participated in the IgCC panel workshop October 16 & 17

On October 16 and 17, BIA members participated in a panel workshop discussing the 2012 International Green Construction Code (IgCC). The IgCC is the first model code to include sustainability measures for an entire construction project. In 2012, the SBCC created the Investigative Committee for Green Code, led by members of the USGBC Hawaii Chapter Advocacy Committee. Members of this committee facilitated these discussions.

BIA's perspective centered around the code's excessive and redundant requirements, which go far beyond building codes' role of protecting the public's health and safety, the cost of these additional mandates, and the fact that implementation and enforcement would also be costly and extremely difficult. BIA is opposed to any mandates of this code, or incorporation of IgCC provisions into our existing codes.

A warm aloha to Greg Thielen, Complete Construction Services Corp. and 2013 BIA President, Doug Pearson, Castle and Cooke Homes Hawaii, and Shawn Moseley, Breezway, for taking the time to prepare for, and participate in, the 2-day workshop. Great job!
